Suhadolnik seeks to close Ohio State gay service office
by Bob Boone
State Senator Gary Suhadolnik, R-24, of Parma Heights, has vowed to close the newly opened Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Student Services Office at Ohio State University. In a meeting with the OSU Board of Trustees, the senator raised his arguments, including his belief that gays and lesbians are not a legitimate minority. Suhadolnik said that if necessary he would propose legislation in the General Assembly to block funding of the office.
The Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Student Services Office opened July 1 after five years of preparation, with a variety of studies and reports. There was a national search for someone to head the office with the result leading to Phil Martin, a professor at OSU. In a phone interview, Martin described the office's current services as providing referral information and a
speakers bureau, as well as educating others about Ohio State's non-discrimination policy, which includes sexual orientation. The office also helps to coordinate the five separate lesbian and gay groups registered on the campus.
Following meeting with OSU president Gordon Gee, Martin reports that Gee supports the office 100 percent. The Board of Trustees also remains determined in its support to meet the needs of OSU's diverse student body. The university administration has stated that it will not tolerate discrimination or violence. There have
parents, disapproves of any sort of specialty groups on the OSU campus. As well as the Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Student Services Office, Suhadolnik has expressed opposition to services for OSU's women's, African, and Hispanic communities.
Both Phil Martin and Stonewall Union in Columbus suggest letters and calls to
encourage the continued support of the OSU administration. President Gee can be contacted at 205 Bricker Hall, 190 North Oval Mall, Columbus, Ohio 43201; 614292-6359. The same telephone number can be used to reach the Board of Trustees.▼

Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens to benefit Health Issues Taskforce
The Health Issues Taskforce of Cleveland and the Cleveland Play House are sponsoring a benefit performance of a new play: Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens. The performance will take place in the Cleveland Play House's Brooks Theatre on Monday, January 7, 1991 at 8:00 p.m. Proceeds of the benefit will be used to support the Taskforce's AIDS education and service programs. Elegies was written by Bill Russell and has music by Janet Hood. It will be performed by the Lab Company of the Cleveland Play House. Leslie Swackheimer is directing.
The play is based upon stories related to panels in the Names Project Quilt. The stories are both serious and humorous. As the title suggests, there is a wide variety of
characters portrayed.
Following the performance, a reception with the play's cast and crew will be held in Studio One of the Play House.
Tickets for Elegies are $25.00 for Sponsors and $40.00 for Patrons. Sponsor tickets include admission to the play and the reception. Patrons will receive special program recognition and preferred seating to the play.
Tickets can be purchased by mail starting December 3 from the Health Issues Taskforce office, 2250 Euclid Ave. Cleveland, OH 44115. Checks should be made out to the Health Issues Taskforce. Washington, D.C.-The U.S. Congress on October 27 gave final approval to landmark legislation that removes gay men and lesbians from the nation's list of immigration exclusions and paves the way for removal of HIV and AIDS from the policy.
The Family Unity and Employment Opportunity Immigration Act contains sweeping provisions for allowing immigrants and visitors to enter the country, and reforms McCarthy-era restrictions that prevented many people-gays and lesbians included—from visiting the U.S. During conference committee negotiations on the bill the lawmakers added a clause that gives the Department of health and Human Services power to delete AIDS and HIV from the list of restricted diseases.
Since the 1950s the Immigration and Naturalization Service, following passage of the McCarran-Walter Act, has held that individuals "afflicted with psychopathic personality, or sexual deviation" are ineligible to receive a visa or to enter the U.S. Although the American Psychological Association and other groups long ago removed homosexuality from lists of

mental disorders, the INS has continued to use the policy.
The AIDS immigration restriction, created by Sen. Jesse Helms in the previous Congress, has received considerable national and international protest. HHS and the Bush administration have repeatedly said it was Congress' responsibility to remove HIV from the immigration list.
The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGLTF), which lobbied for immigration reform, praised the move and called for the president to sign the law immediately and remove HIV and AIDS from the HHS list of exclusions. "This bill is a major strike against institutional homophobia and AIDSphobia," said NGLTF spokesperson Robert Bray. "The obnoxious and bigoted policy has resulted in gay people and people with AIDS being turned away at our borders."
NGLTF lobbyist Belinda Rochelle said the "burden of responsibility" for removing AIDS from the list is now upon Dr. Louis Sullivan and President George Bush.
